The pilot course was launched June 11, 2008 and concluded with a face to face meeting of all participants and course organizers on September 18th.

22 participants took part in the 6 weeks course and the results showed increased proficiency in Web 2.0 tools. Results also showed that the course should be broken down into smaller chunks with more time given to learn each piece. Those suggestions are being implemented in the execution of round 2 to launch in mid-October.

What is it? Definition of a Blog:

Wikipedia Definition: A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. As of December 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 112 million blogs.

Why should Teachers have a Blog:

A blog is a web page that’s easy to publish and interactive way to communicate. It can be a reflective practice for the author and readers. It’s an accessible way to share ideas, explore them and take part in a larger community. It allows others to add input to the blog in a discussion or comment form. As you think about your reasons for having a blog, decide on your audience. Are you a classroom teacher trying to reach your parents? Are you a leader wanting more collaborative communication with your peers or other proffessionals? Are you planning to build a blog for your students to contribute to and interact with each other? In essence, the reason for having a blog is communication. In the words of James Humes, “The art of communication is the language of leadership.”

In my recent blog readings, I have come across the prevailing thought that the importance of blogging is not just to make your voice heard, but it is the ongoing conversation that happens after a blog/piece of writing has put out there and others comment back to extend the conversation. It is not just the writing workshop process happening in the classroom, but it is taking it to the world. When you have to clarify and defend what you say, you improve your ability to write with a clear focus on your audience and purpose in expressing yourself.

Students who blog have a great opportunity to see their writing read by others and even get feedback on their thoughts and insights from “real-world” people and not just their teacher. How powerful is it to know that anyone in the world can read what you wrote and make comments. Remember – Comments can be moderated so that the not so helpful ones are not made public.

What are some examples of student created blogs? Here is a list taken from Will Richardson’s Book Blogs, Wikis, and Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for the Classroom.

learn how to blog – nothing better than a hands on experience for learning

class writing assignments/ ongoing portfolio of writings - blogs would keep all the writing organized and students can look back over time and see how their writing has changed over the year. This could also be a showcase of their best work.

express opinions or insights about class topics – Blogging is not just for LA classes, students can give insight on:

history topics

pieces of music

what makes learning a new language hard

how science and math can be found in everyday life

write editorial pieces about current events

discuss class activities

Any other ideas?
